EMDR Therapy

Healing Trauma Through Brain-Based Processing
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy method designed to help individuals recover from trauma, anxiety, and emotional distress. Developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro, EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation, usually in the form of eye movements, to support the brain in reprocessing unresolved memories.
When something overwhelming happens, those memories can get “stuck,” causing ongoing anxiety, fear, or emotional pain. In EMDR treatment, your brain reprocesses those memories so they no longer feel as intense or triggering.
You don’t have to retell every detail of what happened; instead, we focus on helping your mind and body release the emotional charge attached to the memory. Unlike traditional therapy, EMDR focuses on resolving the emotional and physical reactions tied to painful experiences.
Conditions EMDR Can Help Treat
While EMDR was initially developed to treat trauma, it is now used for a wide range of mental health concerns, including:
- PTSD and complex trauma
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Phobias
- Depression
- Grief and Loss
EMDR can also help with conditions like disordered eating, relational wounds, or postpartum concerns. With treatment, over time, those experiences lose their power—you remember what happened, but it no longer controls your emotions or reactions. It works faster for many clients because it targets the brain’s natural healing process, helping to rewire how memories are stored rather than just talking about them.
The EMDR treatment process is safe, structured, and paced around your comfort. Many who have experienced it describe feeling lighter and calmer, and notice lasting relief from triggers, improved sleep, as well as a deeper sense of safety and control in their lives.

How EMDR Therapy Works
EMDR helps you move from just surviving to truly healing, creating space for peace, confidence, and emotional freedom. This modality is grounded in the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, which suggests that traumatic or distressing events can become "stuck" in the brain. When this happens, the memory—along with the emotions, thoughts, and body sensations linked to it—fails to fully process.
EMDR can help when talk therapy hasn’t brought lasting relief because it activates the brain’s natural healing mechanisms. By using bilateral stimulation (such as guided rapid eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones), EMDR therapy facilitates the reprocessing of disturbing memories so they can be stored more flexibly without the emotional charge.
Over time, clients often experience a shift in beliefs, feelings, and physical sensations associated with the trauma. It allows clients to heal on a deeper, neurological level—often bringing breakthroughs where insight alone couldn’t. Clients who’ve felt trapped in old patterns or trauma finally begin to feel calm, safe, and free to grow beyond survival.
What To Expect During EMDR Sessions
EMDR is an eight-phase therapeutic process tailored to each individual’s needs and administered by a trained therapist.
1. History Taking
The therapist gathers information about past experiences, current challenges, and treatment goals.
2. Preparation
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps to challenge negative thinking patterns and build healthier coping strategies, fostering self-compassion.
3. Assessment
The therapist helps you identify a specific distressing memory, negative self-beliefs, and preferred positive beliefs.
4. Desensitization
Bilateral stimulation is used while you recall the targeted memory, reducing your emotional reaction over time.
5. Installation
Positive, adaptive beliefs are reinforced through continued bilateral stimulation.
6. BodyScan
You’ll notice any residual tension or distress; if present, processing continues.
7. Closure
Sessions end with grounding techniques to ensure emotional stability, even if the memory isn’t fully processed yet.
8. Reevaluation
At the next session, the therapist checks your progress and identifies any unresolved issues.
Why Choose EMDR Treatment?
This therapy is recognized globally for its effectiveness in treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and has also shown positive outcomes across a wide range of mental health concerns.
Clinical studies show EMDR counseling can significantly reduce or even eliminate symptoms of PTSD in as few as six sessions—especially for single-event trauma. It’s an efficient and well-tolerated option for clients who want to heal without retraumatization.
